Cage-Tips

On this page you will find tips and tricks suggested by Jean-Louis or by other pilots to help cage pilots in using their favorite toy !

Ground handling

  • Jean Louis suggest something interesting to inflate the wing in low or nil wind conditions : You'll have to add two "estropes" at the lower end of the central A risers (found in your spare parts bag). This will enable you to shorten these lines by holding these two "estropes" with your thumbs during inflation. This has the same effect as holding the lines themselves with your thumbs, but the lines are not bent.
PS : Install the "estrope" in parallel with the one that connects the line to the cage, knot against knot.
These "estropes" may be lengthened to be used when doing a forward launch. The "estropes" could eventually pass through the forward lyra tubes. Never been tested. Be careful. Could be dangerous if the "estropes" get caught somewhere !
  • When you want to gather your wing to leave the field after landing, or to climb up the hill, it is not easy to grab all lines at the same time since they are separated at both ends. The trick is to do a half turn with the cage about the yaw axis, so that the forward side is facing the ground. All lines cross at a single point where they can be grabbed all together with one hand.
Startling, isn't it ? (Have a look at the diagram )
  • Two small pieces of Velcro (male and female) sewed together can be used to attach all lines together while packing la Cage.
This Velcro can be wrapped around one of the 10 mm tubes to store it in flight.

Cocoon

  • To prevent your feet to get trapped in the foot-bar, you can stick to or sew around the bar a piece of female Velcro. A piece of male Velcro will be sewed in the bottom of the cocoon.

  • An other way to solve this problem is to place a "stopper" on the lines that are connected to the foot-bar. This way, the foot-bar can be held up behind your knees. In flight, pushing with your feet will make the "stopper" slide on the lines.

  • In order to prevent the leg straps from sliding down during ground-handling, you can attach them with an elastic tape to the chest strap (one for each side).

  • Back pocket:
The Parachute Shop harness has a relatively narrow back-pocket with a small opening. Some of us have dificulties to introduce their bag in it. Here is what Jean-Louis suggests. Do not put the cage protections in the bag. Put it on the ground with all straps facing up. Roll it carefully and tightly so that all straps are inside the roll. It can then be easily introduced in the back-pocket and you can also put the cage protections and other things.
  • Some bags are a little tight to accomodate the wing, cage and harness. You can gain some volume by turning the back plate 90° from the normal position. Do not forget to mark its position to re-place it properly before the next flight.

Instruments

  • To attach your vario or GPS on the cage, you can use plastic clips used for 25 mm PVC piping, that you will screw directly to the instrument. A wood or metal or plastic plate can be used. 2 plastic clips will be screwed to it and a piece of Velcro glued to the plate will hold the instrument (for Renschler or GPS)
